Mortal Kombat – Reptile, Chameleon and Khameleon

On to number 18, 19 and 20. Reptile being a classic and another favourite character of mine, with Chameleon and Khameleon also being a favourite even though not much is known of them.

18. Reptile

Reptile – MKX

First appearing as a hidden character in the first Mortal Kombat installment, Reptile holds the title of being the very first secret character ever to appear in a versus fighting game. Reptile is often overlooked as he has quite the sad backstory. His home realm of Zaterra was destroyed and he believes he is the last of his race known as “Saurians”, to be alive. His strength lies in his stealthy behaviour and unquestionable loyalty. Many evil henchmen have the goal of becoming the ultimate power force, Reptile has no wants for that but instead he hopes of finding a way of bringing his home realm back. This idea is constantly in his mind and because he is so obsessed with this, he is known for temporary fits of insanity and rage. He is however, well-meaning and not a vicious killer – unless he is forced to be. He believes by serving and being loyal to any master, he will be presented with a method of returning his home and former glory of his race. He also serves to continue to give him time to think of a way himself of bringing them back.

Reptile’s age has come into question several times throughout the games and no one is quite sure how old he really is. Assumptions have been made, stating him to be thousands of years old, if not millions. A theory was brought forth, stating that a war between Gods occurred millions of years ago which is what forced his race of raptors to find a new home, hence Zaterra. Unfortunately, this was eventually annexed by Shao Kahn. Instead of being killed or used as a slave, Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn saw strength and a unique gift in Reptile and decided to have him fight for them.

Another theory is brought forth with the introduction of minor characters Chameleon (male) and Khameleon (female). It is said that both are indeed part of the Saurian race but this was never confirmed and thus remains an on-going debate. If this is the case, then Reptile has at least two allies (I hope) that can perhaps help him answer questions about Zaterra and Saurians.

With his many abilities, which include acid spit and invisibility among others, he makes for a formidable foe. It was revealed to us in MKX that his real name is Syzoth as Raiden states this during their dialogue, prior to fight. Dwelling in Outworld, he is allied currently, after Shao Kahn’s defeat with Kotal Kahn, Erron Black and Ermac.

Although  Reptile has had many representations of having an appearance like a real-life reptile, below are two different visual representation of this, one being from the most recent MKX.

19. Chameleon

Chameleon – MK: Armageddon

Chameleon, a warrior I would love to see the developers push to include him in more games. I know there are many fans who may like him but prefer not to know his background; that is something I can live with. I would like to see him with his own unique move set and also occasional hints perhaps at his background and allegiance.

His skin transparency and his classification as a “deadly warrior” are essentially as far as it goes for getting to know his background. It is also said that he had been present during all Mortal Kombat events, from Liu Kang’s first tournament win to current Mortal Kombat events. He remains hidden and waits for the right time to reveal himself. His first appearance was in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and his last came in Armageddon. He is said to be on the side of evil but no concrete evidence can confirm this thought. In MKX, one of Reptile’s dialogues, when facing himself in a mirror match, ask if his opponent is Chameleon, which I absolutely loved. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

I personally would like to see him work with Reptile and the two be unstoppable together, with their similarities and their stealthy behaviour and abilities, it would be an interesting approach to see something along those lines occur. He has the potential to be a fierce and very good fighter and I hope with time, that is what occurs. I won’t go into much more detail except to inform you that I do really like him and hope to see more of him in the future.

20. Khameleon

Khameleon – MK: Armageddon

Like Chameleon, little is known of Khameleon. She was a playable character in Mortal Kombat Trilogy for Nintendo 64 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon for Wii console. What I can confirm, as this was released, is that she is from Zaterra and is of Saurian origins, exactly like Reptile. A short video released information that she tries to convince Reptile that Shao Kahn is deceiving him however she cannot get to him, yet. Reptile does listen to her and they have spoken before, but little information was released and Reptile is still relatively confused, standing between Khameleon and what his mind tells him; that he is the last of his kind after so long. She is believed to be aligned with good and has the mind set, like many from the side of good, of taking down Shao Kahn. She believes that she and Reptile are all that remain from their race.

Remaining concealed and camouflaged, she wandered aimlessly from realm to realm until she came across warriors discussing a possible weapon that provides God-like power, in Edenia. Her goal is clear; to find and acquire this weapon and it’s power. With this new power, she would herself kill Shao Kahn and his minions and ideally restore her and Reptile’s race of Saurians.
